I have so many Thoughts about the ACOC backup charaters, especially in relation to the player's primary one.
Zac: Lapin and Cumulous are both socially reticent guys just on the periphery of the family. They both serve a higher power that is not the Bulb. Lapin was tricked into it, while Cumulous was created for it. Lapin hides it, Cumulous basks in it. Different perspectives on Fuck The Bulbian Church.
Emily: Neither Jet nor Saccharina wanted to rule. Jet would have envied Saccharina's freedom even more than she did Annabelle's, and Jet had everything Saccharina wanted most. Essays could be written about these two, so I'm gonna leave it there and move on.
Lou: We know very little about his backup character, but we do know that his name is Murdo Brer, and he's a necromancer (wizard) who lives way out in the far reaches of Candia. His extreme interest in the dark side of magic turned him into an oozing, slimy, legless molasses man. The exact opposite of Amethar, the illiterate pillar of a rock candy barbarian/fighter whose life is the center of everything.
Ally: Liam is an outsider, he doesn't really belong there. But Caramelinda went out of her way to check in with him about his well-being and suggest a way out of the castle, if he wanted one. He's the only person she was nothing but warm and kind to. (of course. her husband and daughters certainly didn't help that) And then Ally's backup character is Sir Amanda Maillard. The s'mores paladin having an affair with the queen. She belongs in the castle even less, and, of course, her relationship with Caramelinda is very, very close. These two spots of warmth and kindness in Caramelinda's otherwise extremely stressful and challenging life.
Murph: Saying that Theo loved Lazuli and that he is who he is because of her is an understatement. All we know about his backup character is that it was a Bubblegum Monster construct created by Lazuli. That obvious parallel aside, there's something there in the chewiness of gummy bears and bubblegum. It's candy that takes a wile and some effort to finish. They've got staying power. We see that in Swirlwarden's ability and really everything about Theo, and I think it's safe to assume that a construct that looks like that is also not easy to take down.
And then there's Siobhan. Where this started, for me.
Her backup character was Bitternight Darknibs, a warlock made of sugarless chocolate. She said that, if she were to have played her, she would have been Rococoa, having come back from the dead as a revenant to get revenge on Calroy.
Rococoa's need to avenge her murdered family being so strong it brought her back from the dead vs Ruby feeling like part of her died when Jet did and revenge being the only thing keeping her going. Jet being the one connected to Rococoa. If Ruby had died, Amethar would have lost his daughter and gotten back his sister, kind of.
We don't know how aware of her past Bitternight is, maybe it's just, like, a thing we know and will devastate Amethar to learn later, or if there is a more immediate recognition/reunion sort of thing. But no matter what, it would have been absolutely devastating.

Siobhan: "Bitter Knight was a warlock who had sold her sugar for magic, and the secret is that actually she was Amethar's oldest sister, Rococoa, who was a Revenant, because she came back to revenge herself against Calroy for killing her family."

#dimension 20#a crown of candy#bitternight darknibs#rococoa rocks#siobhan thompson#dropout#like SERIOUSLY#you can't just introduce the most interesting character concept of this entire world and then leave it???#like of course i didn't want ruby to die but i desperately want to meet this character#it makes me actually insane that this character is canon she's mentioned in episode one and yet we never meet her#my posts#also i'm now wondering just how much the pcs knew bc like#did siobhan know about the calroy twist at character creation? or was that a later detail added to the concept of bitternight?#and did they know about catherine before the church twist? bc how could emily have made saccharina otherwise?

i drew the cover to the d20 x dunmeshi crossover zine Dimensions In Dungeon, which i ran along with oj @vauxphantasma for this years @d20zinejam 🎲🍳
there are over 60 zines in the zine jam bundle! head over to d20zinejam.carrd.co for the itch.io link. all proceeds are going to the occupied palestinian territory humanitarian fund!
[IMAGE ID: the front and back covers of the zine, a redraw of the dungeon meshi vol. 1 cover using the rock’s sisters instead of laios and his party.
the back cover has a few eatable things/creatures from d20 and dunmeshi (bear, mandrake, basrar’s ice cream, walking mushroom, bagel of all things, corn cutie, and green slime), and the following text: “it’s eat or be eaten… literally! as the 2024 dimension zine jam comes around, many in the dimension 20 fandom have fallen deeply in love with delicious in dungeon (also known as dungeon meshi). the two series compliment each other in many ways and a lot of the characters would surely do well in each other’s worlds, but there is just one problem: dimension 20 in an actual play web series and delicious in dungeon is a completed manga series, there is no way they will cross over! but the fandom comes up with a brilliant idea: “let’s do it ourselves!” characters, settings, and even themes… none are safe from the creativity of these fantasy-loving fans!”
the front cover has rococoa is at the forefront, holding a frying pan and spatula. her three sisters are behind her, in a dungeon, around a walking mushroom that’s being cooked over a fire. / END ID]
#i’m so proud of this zine and everyone who contributed!!!!#please go check it out and also download the entire bundle!!#dimension 20#a crown of candy#delicious in dungeon#dungeon meshi#rococoa rocks#lazuli rocks#citrina rocks#sapphria rocks#my art 🎨

(2:05:13) Is it bad that I'm actively rooting for General Rococoa and Prince Amethar to find out that Deli killed their Mom and Sister and for them to absolutely annihilate him? I don't think that's what's going to happen; (Because Amethar can't die right now so Matt prooooobably won't use him for a PC confrontation to avoid to either an egregious railroad-esque OP-Amethar OR accidentally fucking up the timeline by going OOPS Amethar is dead, I guess resurrection magic has to exist in this world now lol).
But if Deli gets killed by Amethar and or Rococoa that will be the funniest thing I've ever seen and it's 100% deserved. Lou on Lou violence! Fingers crossed!
--------------------------Fanfiction prompt-------------------------------
If it doesn't happen in the campaign, it should ABSOLUTELY happen in Fanfiction. I haven't looked yet because I don't like spoilers so I'm waiting until I'm done to look for Ravening War stuff. But if there isn't anything about Delissandro and the House of Rocks on Ao3 I will be both Shocked AND Appalled at the state of fandom lmfao. The drama and angst potentials are off the charts! Sure, shipping is great fun, but this level of murder, manipulation, and vengeance is so juicy! (And it's not like you can't throw a ship or two in there if you're so inclined, though personally I'm equally as interested in Gen).
Imagine Deli and Rococoa or Deli and Amethar or all three of them, fighting side by side during the war. They're becoming friendly acquaintances or becoming actual friends even, except deep down, Deli knows. He hides a dark secret, he killed his friend's mother, and their sister. And for what exactly? To unite the Meatlands! Yes... right, of course! Maybe Rococoa saves Deli's life and smiles at him or laughs at a joke of his and his much-shriveled conscience twinges. Amethar pats him on the back and jokes that he caught Deli with his pants down, which means they're finally true allies and Deli feels like shit, literally and metaphorically.
There are so many ways you could play it. You could go from Deli's pov and have him slowly devolve into a sort of Lady Macbeth-esque figure as the guilt eats away at him more and more with every act of kindness and friendship. Once he finally realizes the true extent of what he has done. Not just to the House of Rocks, but to the world. The Death of the Queen of Candia is what finally kicked off the continent-wide war, she is the Franz Ferdinand of Candia and I'm not sure he's fully internalized that. I think it's too big.
Or he could be unrepentant to the last, as Rococoa and Amethar find out and turn on him, he could villain monologue about the greater good and being a tool of destiny as they cave his skull in and weep at the betrayal of a friend who was never truly their friend (or was he?)
Or it could be from Amethar's pov (or Rococoa's pov, but I assume most people will pick Amethar because he's a PC played by Lou up against another PC played by Lou so that's more intriguing than an NPC who was mostly just a ghost and a memory in ACOC). And you could follow the story as Amethar and Rococoa meet Deli before a battle. They all end up fighting in the same area and fight well together.
Through various circumstances they keep being brought together. Or forced together in Deli's case. Meanwhile Deli is SUPER uncomfortable lol, but Amethar isn't the most observant guy in the world, he doesn't notice. It's from his pov after all. And we can watch the relationship unfold. Somewhat like what happened with ---SPOILERS FOR ACOC--- Calroy, but different. I do think once you have Amethar's trust, you have it, he's a pretty simple man. Rococoa is more of an unknown to me, but I do know she's smarter than Amethar (not that that's a particularly high bar, sorry Amethar). So maybe Deli saves Rococoa or Amethar because there are a lot of witnesses around and he can't conveniently let them die because that would look really really bad, and he ends up earning their trust.
However you want to do it, it is the perfect set up for a Shakespearian tragedy. The audience already knows that confrontation and doom are inevitable, yet if you play it right, like all good writers you can give the audience temporary amnesia and delusion and make them hope that everything will be ok as you show them having fun and joy and comradery together. It's like walking into the movie theater to see Titanic, even if you know what's going to happen, you still have a good time when they start dancing, and you're still screaming at them to steer the ship in a different direction or not get on the boat in the first place and you're still sad when they drown. (Or for the CR fans out there, it's like walking into EXU Calamity knowing Exandria's history and still getting attached to those characters and rooting for them because you can't help it lol).

Caramelinda talking with Ruby about Lazuli a few years before ACOC just a small moment between the two of them.
your work is so freaking awesome.
trying to beat depression by doing stuff i like. FIGHT
Caramelinda knows that the key to good parenting is remembering that children at the end of the day are their own people who enjoy making their own decisions. You can guide them, help them, protect them from hardships they do not understand and teach them to know better, but at the end of the day, children are independent people who have their own personalities and deserve to grow slowly with the world around them.
But Bulb above, sometimes her Ruby acts so much like Lazuli that it hurts her in ways she never knew were possible.
Nearly all Candians believe that the twins take after their father solely, but no one catches the way sometimes his deceased sisters pick through them. Jet's sense of justice is so much like Rococoa's. Their kindness is so much like Citrina's, their acts of mischief that resemble so much of Sapphria's.
And Ruby's love of books that is almost exactly like Lazuli's.
Caramelinda doesn't know that in a decade or more her daughter will despise learning as a rebellion against her royal title. All that she knows right now is that her precious Ruby is climbing a staircase of books to get the one on the top shelf because the cover was "too pretty to ignore." In most cases Caramelinda would lose hairs over this little stunt, but something about how Ruby moves is so much like Lazuli whenever she makes a new discovery that she doesn't have the will in her to bring her daughter back to the ground.
Ruby thankfully grabbed the book with no problem and slowly returned to the floor with the grace of a professional dancer. At least there is one lesson she's giving all the attention too.
She was just about to gloat in victory over her successful exploit when she noticed her mother standing by the entrance to the library. Ruby tried to hide her findings behind her back with an embarrassed smile. "Mother! What are you doing here?"
"Are you interested in stories of magic now, my little love?" Caramelinda asked, deciding to save her scolding for another time.
Ruby blushed and kicked an invisible rock with her foot. A habit she picked up from Liam. "Maybe so. I know it's forbidden and all, but story is about a princess saving her kingdom using her cleverness and powers and everyone is happy because she also used her magic to bring the harvest back and-"
"So you've read it before." Caramelinda laughed to herself. "Bulb above us, of course you have. I swear, you are just like your aunt Lazuli sometimes."
Ruby's eyes widened. "I am? But I thought father's sisters were prim and proper."
Now that caused a belly laugh to escape from Caramelinda's stomach. "God, no, those women were sometimes worse than their brother. Rococoa would argue with her mother about everything, Citrina opened her own church because she disagreed with the main teaching of the bulb that much and Sapphria found every hidden tunnel within the castle because she was bored for a day. And Lazuli..."
A lump went up Caramelinda's throat.
Ruby reached towards her mother's hand, and grasped gently within hers. "And aunt Lazuli?"
"And your aunt Lazuli was the most reckless of them all." She said fondly.
Ruby gaped at her mother, obviously not believing her in the slightest.
Caramelinda laughed again. "I swear on our family name, what I'm saying is the truth. She was the most insane woman I've ever known. Her head was always in her work and never spent enough time on the ground to notice where she was going. More than once one of her siblings had to stop her from tumbling down the stairs because she was too busy talking about her latest work to notice she reached the staircase."
"And what else did she do?" Ruby asked.
"Oh, there were all those times she let experiments quite literally blow up in her face. She claimed it was for science, to see them until the end, but I personally think she just didn't want to admit she was wrong until it was too late to deny it. I swear, every member of this family is more stubborn than a bull."
Ruby bit her top lip. She pulled her mother by the hand, sat her down in one of the reading chairs by the window and sat on her mother's lap with the book opened right in front of them. "If aunt Lazuli were alive, how would she read this book to us?"
Caramelinda held her daughter as close she could without choking either of them, and read the lines in her wife's gentle voice. "Once upon a time, during an unfortunate time for an unfortunate kingdom, lived a very young girl with the entire world ahead of her..."
